Hi, and welcome. Here you have an opportunity to listen to my latest recordings, read my hints, tips or anecdotes. You can also book me for your next event.
An interesting situation arose a couple of weeks ago. I received a call from the Orchestra Manager of The Queensland Orchestra wanting numbers for Bass players for a great gig with well known singer/songwriter Ben Lee. No guitar required alas. I duly gave the numbers and said good luck. I received another call from the orchestra asking for more numbers the day before the gig as no-one could do the whole season! Panic stations!! At this stage I'm scratching my head for players who would have the skills/confidence etc to do this type of gig and relate to the dynamic of a Smphony Orchestra. It dawned on me that I possess all these qualities. Dare I? So I thought, "I might as well put my name in" which I did. Went in to sight the charts and found that they were fine, did the gigs and had a great time. The point is that you have to take your opportunities when they arrive and be bold. This was my first pro gig as a bass player but I've been tooling around at home, recording the Bass for my own stuff etc for the last few years and I've played with, talked to and learnt tips of some of the best Bass players in the business. The only people who knew were the orchestral management, who have a lot of faith in my abilities and judgement and the drummer Mark Charters who is a good friend and gave me a little guidance on a couple of finer points. I did my homework and it was a very enjoyable experience. It pays to be able to play more than your primary instrument. BTW, Ben Lee writes some very hooky pop/rock tunes.
Cheers
Michael
